Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What do I need to know?
Basic sailing vocabulary is helpful. Common sense is the key. I give a thorough briefing on safety considerations before we get underway. The main one is, stay aboard. No one ever has fallen overboard. Let’s keep it that way.
Q: How do I set up a Skype or FaceTime call with Captain John?
E-mail Captain John at [email protected] or call 252-675-5237 to arrange a video call and discuss your custom tailored sailing instruction with Captain John.
Q: Kids – what’s the minimum age?
The short answer is 10 years old, approximately.
Q: Drugs and alcohol?
Q: Shoes and other footwear?
Wear ’em. Closed-toed shoes are best. Sandals are dangerous. High heels are insane.
Q: Can I smoke?
Only if you suffer personal spontaneous combustion.
Q: Seasickness?
It can happen. It’s not routine, but it can happen. If you have had bouts with it before, bring your favorite medicine. Better yet, take a tab about an hour before we leave. If you start to feel queasy, we can try different courses and try to smooth the ride. If you begin to feel really horrible, we can come back early. It’s important to let me know when you first start to feel badly so that we can change course, put you in a spot where you can see the horizon and try some of the other anti-seasickness tricks that we know.
Q: Dogs?
We love our dog and our dog loves that we leave him ashore, mostly. It’s unnatural for a dog to be on the water, and he doesn’t like the boat’s movement. To compensate for pitch and roll, he digs his claws into the teak. Your dog might, too. That, and it’s a distraction during lessons. Our neighbor dog-sits and is very reputable. We’ll connect you if you need a place for your dog while we’re on the water.

Q: Drugs and alcohol?
- Drugs: NO…absolutely forbidden by the Coast Guard. Not the crew, not passengers, and we’re required to take you home and report any violations to the Coast Guard.
- Alcohol: the Coast Guard doesn’t care, but common sense applies. And if the boat is moving or about to move, Captain John is not drinking alcoholic beverages.
